Interior doors of wood, which can be seen in almost every house, are mostly painted or varnished. If they have lost their attractive appearance, this does not mean that the wood is in poor condition under the layer of such decoration. Possible ways to upgrade old doors

When the preparatory stage is completed, you can proceed to the most interesting - restoration and decoration. It remains only to determine how to update the old interior doors. The choice of a new lining option depends on your skills, the availability of various tools, materials and accessories.

It is easiest to update interior doors in the following ways:

  • painting or varnishing;
  • wallpapering, photo wallpaper;
  • decorating with vinyl stickers;
  • using self-adhesive film;
  • painting using stencils;
  • update using overhead facades.

These methods are the most simple and not expensive, they have found their application in modern restoration works. And the materials that are used for this can be purchased in any building and art stores.

Painting or varnishing

To restore the seasoned appearance of the interior door at home, the first thing that comes to mind is painting. Wooden canvases are covered with different compositions: it can be enamel, transparent or tinted varnish, stain, decorative coatings with protective properties. To give the door a rich color and get a durable coating, you can use acrylic, alkyd enamels and nitro-paint.

It is best to choose acrylic paint. The alkyd composition and nitro paint will be cheaper, but their main drawback is a pungent odor and harmful fumes.

For the application of enamel can be used as a brush, and rollers. In the first case, the tool will have to be combed to get rid of weakly holding bristles, and then hold in warm water. The second option does not require any training.

Before applying the paint, it is necessary to make the surface treatment - carefully polish, clean, apply a primer for better adhesion of the coloring composition. Paint or enamel is recommended to be applied in two or three layers, maintaining the gaps between them before drying. Tassel paint protruding and shaped elements, as well as the corners, roller - flat areas.

If it is planned to use a varnish, then it should be applied on a surface covered with a pre-painted look. Instead of the stain, it is even better to apply antiseptic on wood to prevent the development of fungi and mold.

Even easier to use regular wallpaper. It can be paper or non-woven linen. Here the most important thing is to choose a reliable glue and the most suitable pattern, pattern or texture of the wallpaper itself. The material for decorating doors can be in tune to the wall decoration, and significantly different.

The process of transformation of interior doors is as follows:

  1. First, the surface is treated with a primer designed specifically for wood. It will be enough one layer to wallpaper paste well.
  2. The size of the door leaf cut wallpaper. It is important that the cut contour exactly coincides with the door (taking into account the allowance for bending).
  3. Wallpaper glue is diluted, according to the instructions from the package, and applied evenly over the entire area of the decorated part of the door.
  4. A paper sheet is applied and smoothed from top to bottom with a rubber spatula or a clean roller. Excess edges are trimmed.

It is important to wait until the final drying of the wallpaper - about 12 hours or a day. Then you can attach the accessories to the place and hang the door on the hinges. But it would be nice to further decorate the canvas with any decor.

An excellent option can be foam or polyurethane moldings. They stick on top of the wallpaper. You can make of them a decorative frame on the edge of the canvas - the style will change completely.

Stencil dressing

Easily and simply you can restore the door leaf, using stencils, over which paint is applied. The result may be an interesting pattern or pattern. Stencils are sold ready in many art stores, but you can make such a template with your own hands. For making a stencil, you can take a large sheet of paper, cardboard or old wallpaper. First, a drawing is thought out and transferred to the base, after which it is cut along the contour of the image.

Before using the stencil, it is better to paint the door completely in a certain color and wait for the paint to dry. Next, the template is glued to the surface of the canvas in the desired area. This can be done with ordinary scotch tape. Over it paint of other color is put, all emptiness in a cliche is filled. The most convenient way to do this is to use a roller or sprayer.

Use vinyl stickers

Vinyl stickers are a modern variant of decorating various surfaces. They are glued to any smooth base, they are not afraid of moisture and exposure to ultraviolet rays. If interior doors have a slightly worn surface, then such areas are easy to hide just under such interior decoration. If necessary, the cloths can be washed and cleaned without fear that the sticker will come off or deteriorate.

The main advantage of vinyl stickers in reusable use. They are easily glued and peeled off in the same way, leaving no traces.

The use of self-adhesive film

It is possible to restore the old wooden door with the help of self-adhesive film. It is sold in rolls in the same way as wallpaper. Buy self-adhesive you will not be difficult, it is in every building supermarket. This film is presented in different versions: it is matte and glossy, monochromatic and with a pattern, there are analogues with holographic images, with imitation of wood, with photo printing.

Before you upgrade interior wooden doors in this way, you must prepare them: clean from dirt and greasy traces, remove all accessories. The surface should be flat and smooth. If there are any defects, they are eliminated by grinding and further varnishing. It's easier to achieve the perfect foundation.

Gluing such a film is easy, just remove the protective layer and sticky side to attach to the base. It should start from the top edge of the door leaf, smooth with a plastic spatula from the center to the edges, gradually moving down.

Update using overhead facades

If you have tried all of the above methods, but did not achieve the expected result, then the restoration process requires a cardinal approach. Overhead facades will help you turn old doors into new ones. Cover plates are used when the canvases need not just to be restored, but to completely renew their facing. They are made of different materials: wood, MDF, plastic. The second option is more affordable.

Such decorative plates are attached to the door leaf in two ways: with mounting glue and using self-tapping screws. But first you need to purchase such a facade in a building company of the right size (the lining should correspond to the parameters of the door leaf).

Overhead facades of MDF are not afraid of moisture, they are allowed to wash and clean with chemical means. They do not deform over time, have sufficient rigidity and strength, will last you a long time.

What can be done with fittings?

If you do not want to go to the store for new door handles, hinges, locks, or simply there are no funds at the moment, you can also work on the fittings. Also, an independent restoration of such elements will be necessary if they are unique (they were once custom-made or belong to antiques).

To restore the metal fittings, process all the parts with emery paper. This will eliminate traces of corrosion. Degree the surface and apply a layer of special primer-enamel - it is sold both in cans and in the form of a spray (the second option is more convenient to use).

How to restore the old front door?

If you are also interested in how you can update the front door at home, then it all depends on the material from which the product is made. So, a canvas made of wood can be restored by all the methods listed above, but painting, varnishing, and the use of a self-adhesive film will be more preferable. Also, wooden entrance doors are often veneered with laminate, MDF panels, covered with artificial leather.

Upholstery materials under the skin - this is an opportunity not only to transform, but also to warm the door leaf. It is enough to purchase material for covering (vinyl artificial leather, leather substitute, leatherette, PVC film) 10–15 cm wide more than the door block, and also foam rubber in accordance with the size of the canvas and decorative carnations. First, foam rubber is laid on the door, on top is artificial leather, which is then nailed around the perimeter with nails (the edges must be bent).
